Finding Your Howl

This is a link to the story I am referring to and summarized.

Finding Your Howl Part 1:

This is a story about a pack of wolves living in captivity. This caused them to forget how to howl. Mumon is one of the wolves. They get released back in to the wild. Mumon decides he is going to go into the woods to rediscover his howl. He hunts down a deer and the deer shows Mumon that he just used a basic instinct without thinking, which that is what he needed to do to find his howl. Mumon imagines he is at a ritual calling upon him, but he is actually standing with his pack howling at the moon.

Jonathon Flaum has some very good points within this story. He is showing us that we can get hung up in our surroundings and forget what makes us, us. When this happens, we need to do what Mumon did. We must just trust our instincts and regain our "howl".

Chuck Palahniuk is know for a quote that I hold extreme value for. “It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.”. This quote was used in the 1999 movie Fight Club. In the movie, the Narrator just got chemicals poured on his hand by Tyler Durden. Tyler then forces the narrator to endure the pain, in order to prove a point. He says the quote to explain to the narrator that without pain and sacrifice, we would have nothing. The narrator is trying to ignore the pain by forcing himself to meditate.  Tyler Durden is forcing the narrator to stay conscious, by yelling at him and smacking him. The narrator eventually lets the chemicals continue to burn him because Tyler should his scars and the narrator then understood the point he was making. I believe this concept continues throughout the story, with everyone fighting each other, even though it could cost them their job, friends and families. This is a very important part in the movie because it impacts the audience and sets a tone for the rest of the movie.
I have this quote tattooed on my chest. I decided to get it because, i believe in it one hundred percent. I have a personal attachment to this quote. I have not had an easy childhood and I've been through a lot of physical and mental pain. My parents are both alcoholics and they were not around much. So at an early age I was without parental figures. I was on my own to do stuff children shouldn't be worrying about. I have also had open heart surgery and other surgeries. I almost lost my life, but I lost friendships and my other love, which was bmx. Although it hurts to lose these things, I believe it has made me a stronger and better person. It has made me a more independent mature adult.
The quote speaks to me because with everything in our daily lives, we limit ourselves on what we accomplish. Without all the distractions and limitations, we would be truly free to do whatever we want and we could accomplish more. This quote explains why i got into the creative industry. After my heart surgery, I couldn't race bmx anymore, so I had to find another outlet. I started with art and digital design. I went to a technical school and got pretty good. I later moved on to music. I already played percussion, but i started to get into other instruments. I then later got into bands and the way the bands write their music. So without me "loosing everything" I wouldn't be where I am today.
